To everything a season...

So I'm thinking that, at this point in my life, it's not so much a time of romantic love for me as it is for philosophy. Yes, that's right, friends. Philosophy. Me. I only wish I'd happened across it sooner!!

In large part, this new interest in philosophy stems from the AWESOME conversation I'd had in Albuquerque, then with subsequent friends. I am now fully engrossed in the book Sophie's World, which I couldn't recommend more. In fact, I spent this past weekend in Las Vegas with an old buddy of mine, who bought the book so we could discuss it. Thus, our entire Saturday afternoon was spent reading the novel and pausing to discuss it. Awesomeness and nothing short of it!

I suppose maybe I'll try dating again when the new year comes along, but not before then. For some reason, I'm not really into the whole idea of dating at the time. It seems I'd like to get my head on straight before attempting that again. So here we are.

In the meantime, friends, I leave you with a few questions directly from the novel:

1.) Who are you?
2.) Where does the world come from?
3.) What does it take to live a good life?
4.) Are we born with innate "ideas"?
5.) Is there a basic substance that everything is made of?

(As an aside, I think so much good can come from asking questions. After all, what is science if not the quest for answers?)

1) BK
2) Ooo, good question. I'm pretty sure I have no clue, but the Big Bang Theory seems feasible enough. I think it's pretty much impossible to determine...at least, in our lifetime.
3) Love--not necessarily the love you'd find in a relationship, though that is absolutely vital, too. It's that unconditional love, perhaps for your child or for your sibling, that motivates a lot of people. In some fortunate cases, you may be able to find it in a friend. I can't help but think how scary life would be without that kind of love.

Goals are also important; it's one of the few things we have over all other animals. We can think beyond our next meal, and having a place to be safe; we also have the need (or, in some cases, just the capacity) to improve ourselves and make the world around us a better place.

4) I'm a strong believer in the nature/nurture theory. We are all born with certain personality traits, though they can be improved upon through our experiences in the real world. As far as ideas come, though, I think those are almost all entirely formed from our environment. If we didn't have our parents to show us the basic ways of the world, and teachers to explain the greater details, then we'd be left to form our ideas solely on the immediate world around us. Then again...some of the decisions we make are based off of our personality. For example, someone who's extremely nurturing will base their choices in life from that. I guess my answer goes both ways, then...

5) Unfortunately, I can't think of an answer beyond "Yes: atoms." If you're asking if there's something else, beyond the physical stage, then I really don't know.
